Elections in Haiti - May 21, 2000

Results

Following delays and problems with the official vote count of the legislative and local elections of 21 May 2000, President Rene Preval announced that runoff elections will be held on 9 July 2000. The election of 21 May was directed at filling 19 of 27 seats in the Senate, all 83 seats of the Chamber of Deputies, and many municipal posts throughout the country. Unofficial results showed that the ruling Fanmi Lavalas won 16 of the 19 Senate seats and a large majority of the municipal posts. Additionally 26 of the 83 seats in the Chamber of Deputies were secured by members of the Lavalas party; the remaining deputy posts will be decided in the runoff elections.
